The word "Pranayama" is a Sanskrit word which is made up of two Sanskrit words, one is Prana and other is Ayama. The word Prana depicts the force of life (or known as breath) and the second word Ayama means to control and inhibit the prana in order to obtain the desired benefits on the human body. Thus, Pranayama is an integral technique of Yoga which is related to as "The extension of Prana" or "Control of breath or life forces". Originated from ancient India, it is one of the vital Yogic exercises which helps in removing negative energy from the body.

Not only involved in controlling the rhythms of vital energy, but Pranayama also helps in instate the healthy mind and body with the tranquil soul. Pranayama is referred to as the optimum path to acquire the ultimate state of consciousness as inscribed in the Yog Sutras of Patanjali. Patanjali in his text of Yog Sutras also mentioned that utmost way to reach the state of Samadhi is holding the breath. Hatha Yoga also mentioned the types of Pranayama in it which can make your body and mind healthy.
Prana, Vyan, Apana, Udana, and Samana are the different types of Pranayama which are amenable for the diverse pranic activities in the body. Prana and Apana are the most important of these Pranayama types in which Apana is known as downward flowing and Prana is referred to as upward flowing.
